Brilliant organist

ST WILFRID'S Church, Haywards Heath, is eagerly looking forward to its next Wednesday at St Wilfrid's on June 24 when the lunchtime recital will be given by brilliant young organist Matthew Martin.

Matthew is the assistant master of music at Westminster Cathedral. He plays for the majority of cathedral services, gives organ concerts and regularly conducts the choir. He recently acted as Master of Music for the Trinity term 2008 and directed a recording of Victoria's Missa Gaudeamus with the Lay Clerks.

In addition to recitals in many of the UK's most prestigious venues and festivals, Matthew is increasingly in demand as a composer and his music is widely performed both in this country and beyond.

Recent commissions have come from the Cardinall's Musick, St Paul's Cathedral Choir and Canterbury Cathedral Choir.

Matthew was born in Birmingham in1976 and read music at Magdalen College, Oxford, where he studied with Dr Bojan Bujic and Grayston Ives.

After graduating in 1998, he joined the Royal Academy of Music as a post-graduate student winning all the major organ prizes and subsequently continued his studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain.

In 2000 he became organist and choirmaster at the University Church and assistant to Dr Edward Higginbottom at New College, Oxford, where he accompanied the choir on tours to Japan, France and Poland as well as on recordings for Erato, Decca and Naxos.

Before moving to Westminster, he was assistant organist at Canterbury Cathedral where he played for the enthronement of Dr Rowan Williams as archbishop. Matthew was recently elected Associate of the Royal Academy of Music where he teaches organ improvisation.

Matthew's programme will include music by Bach, Durufle and Vierne and will conclude with Widor's Marche Pontificale which he played recently on the cathedral's magnificent father Willis organ at the end of the installation of the new Archbishop of Westminster.

The lunchtime recital starts as usual at 1.10pm with coffee available from 12.45pm.

Admission is free with retiring collection to defray costs.
