Call Lewes businesses to frame future

Lewes news

Lewes news

Lewes Chamber of Commerce is calling on local businesses to help form a group that can meet to discuss what they would like to see in the town’s Neighbourhood Plan.

There is currently a Neighbourhood Plan steering group, which includes members from different bodies, organisations and community groups all working on the plan. However, business/economy has so far been under-represented.

The steering group is working on what will go in the plan that will benefit Lewes, under different headings including ‘Community and Culture’, ‘Housing’, ‘Transport’, and ‘Business/Economy’.

Having the Neighbourhood Plan also allows the Lewes community a chance to have a say in what the new Community Infrastructure Levy can be spent on. A Neighbourhood Plan can set out a vision, aims, policies and proposals for future development of a neighbourhood. Neighbourhood Plans can only be adopted following independent examination and a 50 per cent ‘yes’ vote in a public referendum, but if they are adopted, the plan forms part of the statutory development framework for the area so that the local authority and planning inspectors will have to take it into account when making planning decisions.

There will be an Neighbourhood Plan Public Open Day on August 16 in Lewes Town Hall.

If you have a business in Lewes and would like to be part of the Chamber’s ‘Business/Economy’ group (even if you’re not a member of the Chamber) then please contact Ashley Price, Joint Secretary, on 07917 382316 or email secretary@leweschamber.org.uk
