Residents are being asked their views on moving the Post Office at South Coast Road, Peacehaven, inside the Nisa Local convenience store along the road.
This week the Post Office started consultation on the plan for a ‘new style branch’, which includes more than doubling opening times to 60 hours a week, across seven days, and improved accessibility.
One resident said there was no easy access for customers to park at the Nisa store.
“They will be parking in bus stops, double yellow lines, because they won’t use the car-parks as they are going to be pay and display,” she said.
“I don’t see the point in having three Post Offices within half a mile of each other.”
The Post Office said there is limited parking outside the current site.
The Nisa store has off-road customer parking within 50 metres of the store and a bus stop again within 50 metres with a direct bus route.
The Nisa store at 141 South Coast Road is about 640 metres away from the current branch at number 138 .
The Post Office said the move is with the current subpostmaster’s agreement.
The new Peacehaven Post Office would have three serving positions - two screened and a Post Office serving point at the retail counter.
This is a new concept for delivering Post Office services with Post Office products and services available alongside retail transactions during shop opening hours.
Post Office customers would benefit from opening hours being extended by 60.5 hours a week as selected Post Office products and services will available during shop opening hours, which will be Monday to Sunday from 7am to 10pm.
The extended hours would include Saturday afternoon, all day on Sunday and the branch would open significantly earlier in the morning and close much later every day.
There would also be easier access at this location as the premises has level access with a wide automatic door at the entrance.
A low level writing desk and low level serving counter would be available.
Internally, there would be a hearing loop and space for a wheelchair.
The Post Office is inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the move in a six week public consultation ending on October 22.
The move is part of major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments.
