Call for the return of Lewes in Bloom competition

A call has been made for the revival next year of the Lewes in Bloom competition, once a popular feature of the local calendar.

It ran from 1994 but ceased in 2005. Similar events continuing in neighbouring Seaford and Newhaven have prompted the request.

Carol Morgan, of the Lewes and District Garden Society, has written to Lewes Town Council asking for the reinstatement of the popular annual contest to be discussed at a future meeting.

She said: “We know that budgets are hard-pressed these days, but with sponsorship this would seem to be a small cost to the town.

“Perhaps it could be run alongside the Lewes Allotment Show for prize-giving.”

She added: “There used to be several categories of competition, from best front garden

and back garden, to pots and patios.”
