A parliamentary candidate is campaigning for more services to be made available at East Dean Post Office.

Maria Caulfield is Conservative Prospective MP for Lewes. She said she has been contacted by a number of residents in the East Dean and Friston area who would like more post office services made available.

She said the post office in East Dean is not able to accept cash deposits in to bank accounts, payment of bills which do not have a bar code and can no longer accept cheques for any payments. Maria said: “The nearest main post office is in Eastbourne which is a long way to travel for some of our residents, especially for those who are not online or do not have access to their own transport.”

But a spokesman for the Post Office said: “East Dean Post Office was among the first Post Offices in the country to become a modern new-style Post Office two years ago with services provided at a combi till at the retail counter where Post Office transactions can be carried out alongside retail transactions, a Post Office local still offers the majority of Post Office services as before the change with the convenience of longer opening hours.

“Post Office Local is a simpler operating model with more straight forward transactions, therefore customers can be served quickly. East Dean is more suited to the Post Office local style because of the number of customers and proximity to Eastbourne’s main Post Office.”
