2016 looks set to be a year of celebration at Uckfield’s The Picture House cinema and restaurant.

The landmark cinema will have graced the town for 100 years. It opened in 1916 first operating as a garrison theatre for the troops stationed locally. Films started there in August 1920 and continued since.

The Markwick family acquired it in 1968 and transformed it from a single screen into a state of the art three screen cinema and restaurant, winning an award for Best Independent Cinema in Europe at the Event Cinema Association Awards last year. Last January the restaurant opened. Kevin Markwick said: “Cinema is more about the whole experience rather than just the film although we are largely dependent on the continued output of great films. 2015 was a great year with both Spectre and Star Wars pulling people in. These films inspired us to create an event around the films with our Shaken not Stirred Casino event and our midnight screening with special Star Wars burgers.”

This year’s first event on January 18 is a screening of How to Change the World with a Q&A with Sussex based writer director Jerry Rothwell. In February there’s a Dad’s Army ‘Don’t Panic! Dinner and Dance’ with live 40’s music when Kevin says dressing up is a must.

Plus 2016 will be the year of special centenary events. Kevin went on: “We are busy planning events to celebrate our cinematic history as we look forward to another 100 years of cinema.”
