THE ONGOING saga of Uckfield’s Holy Cross church clock reached a timely end last Thursday.

At noon the restored clock was dedicated by the Right Reverend John Hind, BA, DD, Bishop of Chichester.

More than 100 people attended the service and afterwards enjoyed refreshments at the Belmont Centre.

Brian Wilcox, known affectionately in the town as the “Rocking Rev,” returned  to Uckfield from Norfolk to see the outcome of a procedure he began during his time as Rector.

Last July the clock was removed.

The mechanism was reinstated and with repainted and re-gilded clock faces the town now has its landmark timepiece back in action.

The £30,000 restoration was made possible by generous townspeople, some who sponsored a number, repainting a clock face or re-gilding a hand. Bishop John retires next month.

He has lived in Sussex since the early 1980s and said: “I am particularly pleased to be called to be responsible for leading the mission of the Anglican Church in Sussex.
