Hastings and St Leonards Dog Training Club will be celebrating its 60th anniversary on Wednesday (October 15).
The club was founded in 1954 and supplemented its income initially for three years when its founder members, led by Fred and Vera Jones with Howard Withers, performed demonstrations with their dogs in Alexandra Park for four Wednesday afternoons in the summer averaging 1,200 spectators at each performance.
The club went on to run training courses for instructors, show judges, stewards and handlers. It then began to run Open shows and then applied to the Kennel Club for Championship Show status.
The club has continued to grow and develop and now not only has a Competitive Class but also runs Puppy Foundation, Bronze, Silver and Gold Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Scheme classes. Throughout its 60 years, the club has supported several charities.
It welcomes memories and memorabilia from any of its past members, so if anyone has any contributions contact the Club at firstname.lastname@example.org or call 01424 219415 and help the club celebrate 60 years of training dogs in Hastings.
