Cllr Rob Blackman has issued a statement to say a leaked email containing comments about Seaford’s ‘victim mentality’ were not aimed at the people of Seaford, but rather the town’s councillors.

Many local residents called for Cllr Blackman to stand down from his role as leader of Lewes District Council in the wake of the email, and while he did step down from his post days later, he wishes to clarify exactly what was meant by his comments.

In a statement sent to the Express, he said: “I would like it known that leaked comments about Seaford’s victim mentality were contained in a private email to town councillors and were aimed at them and not the people of Seaford, as it has been widely reported.

“I live in Seaford and I love the place. I have no idea what 26,000 people think and feel and to say so would be preposterous. What people leak and how they spin it is not something that should be attributed to me.

“People are crying out for politicians to be open and forthright and this type of behaviour (leaking the email) does nothing to enable that.

“I do hope the Town Council take firm disciplinary action should the leak be disclosed and change their rules so the frankness I was trying to encourage is not permanently destroyed.”

At the time, Cllr Blackman apologised for the email and said: “The key message was that Seaford is not being treated any differently from anywhere else. We have to balance the needs of everyone in the district not just people from Seaford.”
