FIREFIGHTERS and lifeboat teams have been tackling a blaze at a popular seafront pier tonight (June 13).
SIX fire engines were called to a fire at Worthing Pier.
West Sussex Fire and Rescue said firefighters were called to the scene just after 8.30pm.
The flames were out by 10pm but the coastguard and lifeboat were still on scene.
Two teams from Shoreham’s RNLI Lifeboat Station have been launched to assess the scene from the water.
On Twitter a spokesman for the charity said that volunteers were ‘checking for hot spots’ using a thermal imaging camera.
Earlier this evening, one eyewitness took to Facebook saying: “Just saw loads of smoke coming from that direction.”
Reports on Twitter have suggested there was a function taking place on the pier at the time which has been moved to another location.
