A Herstmonceux dancer will be taking on a gruelling challenge when she cycles 400km in five days across Cuba to raise money for a cancer charity.
Bobbie Lorence, who has been dancing for 20 years at dancing clubs in Herstmonceux and Eastbourne, will take part in the October Cuba Challenge to raise money for Women V Cancer.
The organisation raises money for three cancer charities - Breast Cancer Care, Ovarian Cancer Action and Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust.
Bobbie decided to take part in the charity cycle because her mother had breast cancer many years ago and with the care she received, recovered and made it to 92.
She said the research of the charities is very important and they need the funds to continue.
To help reach her fundraising target of £2,900, Bobbie held a Modern Jive Charity Party at Herstmonceux Village Hall on Saturday March 15.
More than 70 jivers attended the event where they danced until midnight, raising more than £1,000 for the charity.
It took Bobbie’s running fundraising total to just over £2,600.
Friend Chris Wollaston, who is supporting Bobbie’s fundraising events, said: “We had a fabulous event, over 70 jivers attended and with the R&R demo it was a swinging evening until just before midnight.
“So far she has another couple of events to go before October so she’s confident she’ll exceed the target of £2.9k.
“We are all very pleased for her.
“We were very fortunate to get the excellent Herstmonceux venue arranged for us by Robert Ball, the DJ who owns ‘Discojive’ and who holds regular weekly events at this venue and who gave his time free of charge for Bobbie’s dance on Saturday.”
The Cycle Challenges are organised and managed by Action for Charity. The route will take Bobbie through the Carribean island’s beautiful scenery. The gruelling challenge will see Bobbie, who lives in Eastbourne, cycle 60km to 80km per day.
The challenge will take place between October 3 and October 11.

The funds raised by Women V Cancer will be divided equally between the three charities and used to support their work.
