Awards night to celebrate best of business in Lewes District

The shortlist has been announced for the first ever Lewes District Business Awards, featuring a number of Seahaven companies.

Twenty-six companies have been named as finalists by Lewes District Council, each hoping to win one or more of the 10 trophies up for grabs.

They include the prestigious Company of the Year and Best Independent Retailer, along with special awards to recognise innovation and entrepreneurship.

The variety of awards ensured a diverse range of businesses from all sectors participated, from family-run businesses to national organisations, representing companies excelling in customer service, community work, retail, sustainability, innovation and tourism.

Hugh Burnett, chairman of the judges, said: “We are delighted with the response to the first ever Lewes District Business Awards. It has attracted a great number of companies, illustrating that our local businesses are keener than ever to promote themselves and gain the recognition they deserve. Congratulations to all on the shortlist.”

Winners will be announced at an awards evening on Thursday, April 24, at Lewes Town Hall, presented by newsreader Nicholas Owen.

The 2014 finalists are: Company of the Year: Cash Bases Ltd, Cheesmur Building Contractors, Newhaven Enterprise Centre. Small Business of the Year: Badger Inks Ltd, The Snowdrop Inn, TimelessTime Ltd.

Businessperson of the Year: Mark Beaumont, Infacom; Mauro Lazzati, Famiglia; Terry Nitman and Steve Hayman, Cheesmur Building Contractors. LEAP Entrepreneur of the Year: Isabelle Fauchet, Live Digital Media; Jen Porteous, The Tiny Vineyard Co; Jodie Deakin, Another Stitch in the Wool; Sharon Lloyd, Woof it Down.

Award for Business Innovation: Cash Bases Limited, CTEC Energy, TimelessTime Ltd. Award for Business in the Community: Mill Laine Farm, Screen Solutions Ltd, The Runaway Cafe.

Award for Clean, Green and Marine: Firefly Solar Generators Limited, Fletching Glasshouses, Screen Solutions Ltd. Award for Best Place to Visit: Ditchling Museum of Art and Craft, Spring Barn Farm, The Charleston Trust.

Award for Best Independent Retailer: Alexis Dove Jewellery, Cheese Please, Mill Laine Farm. Award for Social Enterprise: Age UK East Sussex, Furniture Now!, National Lifesaving Academy.
