An overwhelming response has been received to the Seahaven Business Awards in 2014 with more than 1,100 nomination papers sent in.

A grand total of 74 different businesses were nominated in categories right across the Seahaven district.

Nominations closed on Friday April 11 and the winners will be announced at a gala ceremony in May.

President of Newhaven Chamber of Commerce, Annie Lorys said: “We are thrilled at the response this year – we didn’t think we would be able to cap the success of last year’s event but it looks as if we have.

“This response shows how the Seahaven Business Awards are perceived as the Business Awards in the Seahaven and Lewes District.”

The Seahaven Business Awards are designed to recognise and reward the businesses which always put customers first, the businesses that show a real commitment to their staff, that take pride in being part of the community and businesses which drive to succeed in the current economic climate.

Judging will take place this week for the six awards with judges including Norman Baker MP, mayor of Newhaven Julie Carr and the Presidents of Newhaven, Peacehaven and Seaford Chambers of Commerce.

The winners will be announced at the Chamber Presidents’ Gala Dinner on Friday May 9, at 7pm in the presence of His Excellency Vu Quang Minh, Vietnamese Ambassador to the UK and Ireland and other guests at Peacehaven Golf Club.

There will also be a special raffle with all proceeds going to charity.

Prizes include two return tickets to Vietnam from Vietnam Airlines, a luxury hamper from Co-op Funeral Care Newhaven, flowers from The Flower Shed and hand made jewellery from Mike Shorer Fine Jewellery.

Tickets for the Gala Dinner can be purchased by contacting Newhaven Chamber of Commerce on 01273 517544 or by email to office@newhavenchamber.co.uk.

Tickets cost £30 each which includes a glass of bubbly on arrival and a three course meal followed by coffee and mints.

Annie added: “We have been running this event since 2002 but it would not be possible without our sponsors – this year our key sponsor has been Wave Leisure – we are very grateful to have their support; Sustrans for their help with sponsoring our advertising.”

Award sponsors this year are: Swindells Chartered Accountants, Autowise, The Sussex Sign Company, The Hope Inn, HM Bookkeeping and Badger Inks.
