The countdown is on to Hailsham’s Charter Market which takes place in the town centre on August 9.

Organisers Hailsham Town Council and Hailsham Forward say the event is set to bring energy and a festive atmosphere to Vicarage Field and are promising an even bigger and better attraction this year.

The Charter Market will feature a wide range of food and drink stalls from local traders including those selling fruit and vegetables, meat, sausages and burgers, pies and pastries, bread and cakes, cold meats and cheeses, cookies and fudge, as well as Spanish food, Greek food, chutneys, fish, pizza, hotdogs, doughnuts and vegetarian food.

There will also be stands selling local beer, cider and wine to tempt residents and visitors.

Event organisers said they are delighted to announce that there will be family entertainment and live music throughout the day with Punch ‘n’ Judy and circus skills walkabout from 10am until 4pm, morris dancing from 11am until 11.30am and 1.30pm until 2pm, and balloon twisting from 1pm and 3pm.

The event will also feature live musical performances from the Surgeons of Swing and wartime and swing duo Swingtime Sweethearts.

The live entertainment will continue into the evening with performances from The Jazz Caverners from 7.30pm until 9pm and a Hailsham Community College music group with this year’s John Britton Award winner Michael Cullen on piano from 6pm until 7pm.

Food on offer from 6pm will include a hog roast.

Organisers said in the event of inclement weather, the afternoon and evening entertainment will take place in the Civic Community Hall in Vicarage Lane.

Cllr Chriss Triandafyllou, chairman of the Town Council’s Festivities and Events Committee, said: “Hailsham town centre will be home to an array of food and drink stalls and there will be family entertainment aplenty throughout the day and into the evening.

“The town council has worked hard in recent months to make the necessary preparations for the Charter Market and is grateful to organisers and indeed local traders for their generous support.

“I’m confident that the Charter Market will be a great family event offering something for everyone.”

Hailsham Town Council is already making plans for this year’s Christmas town events which will also take place in the town centre in December.
