A derelict boat was on fire in the River Ouse in Newhaven this morning (Tuesday June 17).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene near Denton Island at 9.26am.

Crews from Newhaven and Roedean attended the scene on the A259 near the bridge to Denton Island.

The barge was well alight and there was heavy smoke in the area.

Police and Coastguard were also called out and the A259 was closed, causing delays in the area.

Main jets were used to put the fire out.

One fire engine remains at the scene to ensure the fire is completely out.
