Former Uckfield deputy Mayor Duncan Bennett has been successful in his drive to pull together arrangements to dedicate a memorial to Pilot Officer Eugene Seghers, whose bravery saved the town from destruction.

Spitfire pilot Eugene Seghers died when his fighter successfully tipped a VI rocket - heading towards Ridgewood - off course.

The event will be held on July 26 at The Highlands Inn, Ridgewood, attended on behalf of HM The Queen by Lord Lieutenant Peter Field. There will be a fly-past by the Belgian Air Force. Also present on the day will be Captain Eric ‘Winkle’ Brown, the legendary airman and the subject of the recent BBC documentary, ‘Britain’s Greatest Pilot’.

Uckfield Concert Brass will provide the main musical input to the ceremony. Other highlights include The Nightingale Trio playing a version of the ‘Elegy To The RAF - March Past’ which has been specially re-arranged for the occasion by its composer, Wing Commander Barrie Hingley, former Principal Director Of Music for the RAF.

The restaurant area will be decorated with information about Pilot Officer Seghers as well as rare and interesting pieces of RAF World War II equipment and items from the substantial private museum collection of Adrian Kilby.
