People with a ‘40th’ connection to Wealden are being sought to help celebrate the milestone birthday year with the district council.
Wealden District Council, which was set up in 1974, is celebrating its 40th birthday next month and wants 40 people with a connection to the area to attend a special afternoon tea and become civic dignitaries for the day.
You can live in the district and be turning 40, live in Wealden and are celebrating a 40th wedding anniversary, have lived in Wealden for 40 years or have worked in Wealden for 40 years.
By putting your name forward online, people will be included in a draw to identify 40 people who will be invited with a guest to afternoon tea with the Chairman of Wealden District Council at Ashdown Park Hotel on June 22.
The closing date for nominees for Wealden’s Forty for Tea draw is Thursday May 29.
Relatives and friends can also make nominations – but they will have to provide contact details including email addresses – for the nominees so the council can confirm the nominee’s interest before entering their names into the draw.
Also taking part in this civic celebration are the Chairs of Wealden’s 39 parish and town councils – and the Chairman of East Sussex County Council, making up another 40 guests.
Cllr Brian Redman, Chairman of Wealden District Council, said: “Wealden has now been here for 40 years, and with so many other 40th connections around, we thought it would be a shame to let the year pass without a civic event to celebrate our Wealden community.
“Before 1974, Wealden as a place did not exist. It was created as part of the reorganisation of local government in 1974, and it has been quietly fulfilling its role in providing a wide range of important services to the public ever since.
“Unlike the villages and towns in the district, we hold no fairs, festivals or summer fetes – but for once we would like to bring together some of the people who make up Wealden to celebrate the strengths of the Wealden community – which stretches from Forest Row, Withyham and Wadhurst in the north right down to the South Downs and the sea.”
Further anniversary events will be a photographic display of 40 years of Wealden District Council mounted in the public access area at the council’s Hailsham headquarters and a lunch for the past Chairmen for Wealden District Council hosted by the Chairman.
