One of the red letter days on the local calendar has been postponed from the date originally advertised.
Lewes and District Round Table’s annual raft race down the River Ouse will now take place on Sunday, September 7.
Setting off from Lewes Rowing Club at approximately 11.30am, crews on the gaily-decorated craft will battle to be the first to reach Newhaven Marina. Competitors are sponsored to raise funds for their chosen good cause or organisation.
Prizes include ‘fastest time’, ‘most devious means’ and ‘best decorated’. The event, now in its 38th year, has raised in excess of £500,000.
The theme for 2014 is ‘Confectionery’ with teams getting into the spirit of things by decorating themselves and their rafts to reflect this.
Don’t miss the boat – any teams (three to 12 people) who would like to take part should contact the organiser, Matt Craig, on 01273 813093 or firstname.lastname@example.org
Access to Lewes Rowing Club will be limited to crews and organisers only, so for a better view of the start spectators should make their way along the riverbank opposite, accessed via the Railway Land.
Lewes Round Table Chairman Richard Harding, of Lewes business Intersport, would like to hear from other local businesses interested in sponsoring the event either in kind or by donation to help offset the costs of staging the event.
Thanks go to the volunteer groups who give up their time to make the raft race possible.
