Lewes Town Councillor Stephen Catlin says plans for a Premier Inn in the town are still on the cards.

He reported he had been speaking to developers Quora and the message was: “We’re still here. We’re not going anywhere.”

The scheme to demolish the former Magistrates’ Court in Friars Walk and replace it with a 62-bed budget hotel was rejected on design grounds at a meeting of the South Downs National Park’s Planning Committee last month.

Cllr Catlin said Quora had two options – to appeal against refusal or to re-jig the design. The developers had six months from December to lodge an appeal.

Elsewhere, Cllr Catlin said planning regulations are being flouted in Lewes.

He said a town centre hotel had put up a satellite dish, colours on a shop in the conservation area had been changed and a new shop in Cliffe Precinct replaced its fascia – all without planning approval or after seeking advice.
