Visitors from Hailsham’s twin town across the channel were welcomed by the mayor on Friday May 9.

A party of 23 people from Gournay-en-Bray, France, enjoyed an action-packed weekend’s stay on a cultural exchange visit, starting with a meal at the Old Polegate Station restaurant, after a greeting by Mayor cllr Jo Bentley.

She said: “It is always a pleasure to greet our French friends, who have made the trip to help foster town twinning links with our residents.

“They had a busy itinerary lined up, with lots of interesting and exciting activities. I hope they all had an enjoyable visit and take away lots of good memories of our wonderful town.

“Through the Twinning Association we have some excellent ambassadors for Hailsham, and I’d like to congratulate association members for their hard work in organising such a wide range of social events planned for 2014 and beyond.

“There have been many friendships formed in this and past visits and our French visitors thoroughly enjoy coming here as part of the two towns’ ongoing cultural exchange programme.”

The groups made further plans for the July visit to Gournay-en-Bray, when the annual St Clair Festival takes place.

Hailsham & District Twinning Association chairman Keith Townsend said: “It was so wonderful to hear the chatter on the Saturday evening and the dancing together of French and English was wonderful. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

“We are proud we have a membership of over 45 people now but are always keen to recruit new members. We encourage members to host our French visitors and also stay with families when they visit Gournay-en-Bray. However, we always welcome members who cannot host too.”

“We offer several trips and exchanges each year, hold monthly social events and are particularly keen to establish links between local sports clubs and those in Gournay-en-Bray.

“Any clubs interested in visiting France and playing sports there should contact us on 01323 846539.”

The Association is proud to announce that the Hailsham Choral Society will be travelling over with group members in September to participate in a concert in Gournay-en-Bray.
