Members of a charity and health organisation were on hand to give advice on diabetes at a recent roadshow.

Diabetes UK and Bupa held the event on June 30 and July 1 in the town centre and found that 127 out of the 216 visitors who came were at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

They were referred to their doctor for further tests and support because of their likelihood of developing the condition.

According to the charity, getting diagnosed early, or being recognised as high or moderate risk, means that people have the opportunity to make healthy lifestyle choices which can help them avoid serious health problems. Type 2 diabetes is a life-long condition but people who get diagnosed can go on to manage it well, through healthy eating, physical activity and in some cases medication, and live long and healthy lives.

A dietitian was on site at the roadshow to offer advice about how to achieve a healthy balanced diet and an activity zone encouraged people to get moving.

Diabetes UK is the charity partner for the Bupa Great Run Series, and the money raised from these runs is being used to fund the Healthy Lifestyle Roadshows.

Jill Steaton, Diabetes UK south east regional manager, said: “It’s obviously very concerning that so many people in Hastings have been identified as moderate or high risk of Type 2 diabetes, particularly as there are already 9,500 people diagnosed with the condition in Hastings and Rother. Being overweight is one of the main risk factors of Type 2 diabetes but it’s not the only one. Some people will be at risk of the condition because of their age, ethnicity or family history.”
