Early action by Wealden District Council’s Housing Options team prevented 724 Wealden households from becoming homeless in 2013/14, the council has said.
A spokesman said the latest figures highlight that providing help and advice early can stop families from being forced into bed and breakfast accommodation. The number of households which the council helped fell from 180 in 2008/09 to 81 in 2013/14. Cllr Graham Wells, Cabinet member for Housing, said: “It is important that preventative work does not just focus on enabling households to stay in their existing accommodation or finding alternative accommodation. We need to work right across the council to achieve the maximum benefit. A number of our services, including housing management, property services, benefits recovery, enforcement and planning teams, help in co-ordinating efforts. A cross-department agreement will be put in place to formalise this work as part of our new Homelessness Strategy 2013-18.”
