Eastbourne brewers pledge pier beer profits

The Long Man Brewery has created a new beer to help raise money for Eastbourne’s devastated pier.

Brewery bosses, who grew up in Eastbourne, have teamed up with Eastbourne’s Curious Beer Club and will donate all profits from the sale of the new beer, Craft Pier, to the Eastbourne Pier Benevolent Fund, up to the amount of £10,000.

The Pier Benevolent Fund was set up to support businesses affected by the blaze.

“Everyone connected to Eastbourne felt the pain of seeing a fundamental part of our heritage go up in smoke,” said Jamie Simm, head brewer at Long Man Brewery, based just outside Eastbourne in Litlington.

“The Curious Beer Club came to us with an idea and we immediately wanted to help.”

Jamie and his team will be brewing a variation on their flagship Long Blonde beer, adding special ingredients including Phoenix Hops.

“We’re tweaking the recipe to create something for a special old girl,” Jamie added.

“When people drink it they know they’ll be helping those affected rise up again and hopefully it will evoke a real nostalgic sense of the seaside too.”

Adam McNaught-Davis, co-founder of the Curious Beer Club said, “When we heard about the fire we knew we could do something to help, it was just a matter of finding a progressive local brewer. We didn’t need to look far.”

H.T.White, an Eastbourne drinks distributor, has also pledged support by helping Craft Pier reach a wider audience.

Owner Stephen Lees said, “As a long-standing town business, large Eastbourne employer and leading supplier of wines, spirits, beers and soft drinks to the area we feel it is essential to help our Pier and everyone who works on it.

“Eastbourne was built on tourism and we must keep that at the front of our minds.”

To date, the Benevolent Fund has raised more than £4,000.
