The Co-operative Childcare, which has 50 nurseries across the UK, will unveil its brand new £2.1 million eco nursery at Falmer in March.
The state of the art nursery building at the University of Sussex has been designed to achieve a high environmental standard and has places for 101 children between the ages of three months and five years old.
The nursery will be open to both the public and university students and staff.
The purpose-built facility is timber framed and makes use of both natural daylight and ventilation to keep power usage to a minimum.
It has also been thermally modelled to effectively track the path of the sun to make the most of ‘free energy’ and includes efficient lighting and low temperature under-floor heating, all controlled by an intelligent system to keep carbon emissions as low as possible.
The nursery’s commitment to energy efficiency is being maximised with a five-year ecology plan and outdoor planting area for the children, which will encourage local wildlife to the garden and surrounding areas.
A sustainable transport plan has been commissioned, enabling parents and children to travel as economically as possible to and from the nursery.
Richard Bailey, Nursery Manager at The Co-operative Childcare Falmer nursery at the University of Sussex, said: “Our nursery has given us a wonderful opportunity to employ eco-friendly systems and facilities from the ground up, which will all benefit our children and colleagues.
“The money saving benefits associated with lower emissions will allow us to commit to more investment in learning and training experiences, whilst also minimising the impact on the environment, which will continue to benefit our children in the future.”

The Midcounties Co-operative Society’s mission statement is: “To be a successful consumer co-operative working towards creating a better, fairer world, and to enhance the lives of our colleagues, members, customers, and the communities we serve.”
The new nursery features five spacious rooms and the latest technology, including interactive whiteboards, under the control of highly qualified, caring practitioners.
It offers all-inclusive fees – including nappies, cream, wipes, food and formula milk – and freshly prepared nutritious meals.
