Emergency services rescue man from River Ouse

A man had to be rescued by the emergency services after getting trapped waist-deep in the River Ouse this morning (Thursday, March 24).

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service received a call at around 11.25am to say a man was stuck in water near the Bluebell Railway.

The man was believed to have entered the water in an attempt to rescue his dog.

The Technical Rescue Unit from Lewes was dispatched with a fire appliance, also from Lewes. The Water Rescue Team was sent with a Landrover and Unimog, which is an off-road vehicle with a large lifting arm, along with a fire appliance from Crowborough.

A fire appliance from Uckfield was also in attendance along with three fire officers. Paramedics from the South East Coast Ambulance Service, the Hazardous Area Response Team and police were also at the scene.

On arrival, crews confirmed they had made contact with the man and two Swift Water Rescue personnel were deployed to gain access to him using a triple extension ladder. One male was rescued by the Swift Water Rescue Team and first aid was administered at the scene.

The RSPCA was requested for the owner’s dog. The man was left in the care of the Ambulance Service.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Officer in Charge, Dave Thurston, said: “We wish the man involved in the incident a quick and full recovery.

“Congratulations to our Swift Water Rescue Team for a safe, faultless, water rescue extrication. Lots of training goes into this type of scenario to ensure a safe and successful outcome. Well done to everyone involved.

“I would also like to remind members of the public not to enter open water to rescue dogs or other animals.”
