A grant of £61,330 to refurbish Saltdean Lido has been welcomed by Simon Kirby, MP for Brighton Kemptown and Peacehaven.
The award from the Community Asset and Services Grant Programme will be used by the Saltdean Lido Community Interest Company (CIC) to refurbish the facility, which is the UK’s only Grade II star listed lido.
Mr Kirby is a long standing campaigner on behalf of Saltdean Lido and has worked closely with the CIC to help them realise their ambition of returning the lido to its former glory.
He said: “I am delighted that the Saltdean Lido CIC has received its first major grant from the Community Asset and Services Grant Programme.
“It is a further sign that the Saltdean Lido campaign is making real progress. That is testament to the dedication of Rebecca Crook and the CIC in pursuing such a worthwhile cause, and I want to take this opportunity to congratulate them.
“There is still a long way to raise the necessary funds to refurbish the lido. I want to assure people in Saltdean and across my constituency that I will continue working to support the CIC so that this historic community asset can be restored and provide a real boost to the area.”
In December 2013 the freeholders, Brighton & Hove City Council, agreed that it would grant a 60-year lease of the lido to the CIC with a clear remit to restore, renovate and modernise the pool and its historic art deco building which has been on English Heritage’s ‘At Risk Register’ since October 2011.
The grant from SIB - a specialist fund manager with over 1,300 investments in civil society organisations - takes the lido another step closer to becoming a commercially viable amenity that the community can enjoy and be proud of.
With an estimated £5 million needed for the lido’s refurbishment, this first grant kickstarts a major fundraising drive from the Saltdean Lido CIC: Multi-million pound grant applications are being submitted to various organisations, including the Heritage Lottery Fund.
The SIB grant to Saltdean Lido CIC will be used to cover surveys of the building and pool, feasibility studies into catering and room hire and legal costs.
Caroline Forster, Director of Investments, at SIB, said: “Saltdean Lido is an iconic site of immense cultural value. Our mission is to support groups like the CIC in providing services that make life better for the community they serve.”
Rebecca Crook, Chair of Saltdean Lido CIC, said: “We sincerely thank SIB for this grant which is the first step of many that will be needed for us to raise the funds we need. The CIC hopes to take full ownership of the site later in the year, although the extensive building works required will mean it will be closed for around two years.”
The Saltdean Lido CIC has arranged several flagship fundraising events for 2014 including:
Saturday April 12: Saltdean’s first outdoor food and drink market will take place at the lido. Admission will be free and all are welcome.
Friday June 6 and Saturday 7: A beer, wine and cider festival with live music taking place within the grounds of the lido allowing the general public exterior access to the site before the renovation programme.
