Hailsham dancers were hoping to do what the England football team couldn’t when they set off for the Dance World Cup in Portugal at the weekend.
Saturday and Sunday saw a 30-strong team of dancers from the Zoë Pennington Dance Studios head off to Lagoa in the Algarve area to represent England.
The competition brings together more than 3,000 children from 38 countries and the Zoë Pennington dancers, aged between eight and 18, will perform in four group dances as well as two soloists dancing.
Fundraising started in March and the school raised more than £14,000, to get the students to the competition.
Fundraising events included a sponsored ‘Pedal to Portugal’ where students from the school, families and friends cycled the 1,492.75 miles from Hailsham to Portugal to start the fundraising off.
They cycled enough miles to get there and back and raised a massive £6,308.
A quiz night and an Easter Bonanza also helped raise funds for the dancers.
Local companies offered sponsorship as well as sponsoring items the dancers needed.
The Rotary Club Hailsham sponsored the dancers’ hoodies, with the Hailsham Lions sponsoring the Team England t-shirts.
McDonalds Drive-thru in Eastbourne also sponsored the team their Team England tracksuits and holdalls.
Principal Zoë Pennington said: “I am very grateful to everyone who has helped raise funds to get the girls and boys to Portugal, from the students and families who have supported the events, to all the local companies who have helped and a big thank you to the fundraising team for all their efforts in ensuring that we hit the target goal.
“It’s been a lot of hard work with extra rehearsals for the students but worth it in the end.
“I am very proud to be taking the students to the finals and hope they all enjoy the experience of representing their country whilst they are there.”
