An organisation which helps hundreds of Eastbourne residents access vital services is now inviting local people to become part of its volunteer team.

Eastbourne Citizens Advice Bureau is inviting volunteers to join its team as trainee advisers and social policy workers.

Bureau Manager, Alan Bruzon explained, “The majority of people who work in the Citizens Advice Bureaux are volunteers who give their time freely to help others. A small team of paid staff provide the training and support they need to deal with the various types of complex enquiries our clients have.

“It is interesting and satisfying work and plenty of support and help is given from the outset. Trainees start in our reception and ‘gateway’ where clients first make contact with us. After gaining this necessary experience some volunteers go on to become fully trained advisers with basic knowledge in all areas and gain confidence as they do so. They are also shown exactly how to find answers using our comprehensive information systems.”

Alan Bruzon went on to explain how volunteering with the CAB can be a great thing to show on anyone’s CV and automatically gives a good grounding in various aspects of law and public services - information of great value to future employers. The work helps maintain existing abilities - especially vital communication and IT skills - and can help develop new ones.

He said:,“We are also looking for volunteers to join our Social Policy team. As well as advising clients we collect evidence of unfair practices and systems and use this to campaign for change, either locally or nationally. This involves research, evidence reporting and surveys and can be very rewarding work.”

Any applicants who have the time to offer, and who would also like to be at the forefront of work that can really make a difference to the lives of many local people, would be most welcomed by the branch.

People can find out more about what is involved by visiting: www.eastbournecab.co.uk or by telephoning: 01323 413480.

If people want to take it further, an application form can also be downloaded from the same web address.
