Friends of Sussex Hospices (FSH) launched its Mad March Pub Quiz Challenge at The John Harvey Tavern in Lewes on Friday.
Pubs across Sussex are being asked to hold a quiz during the month of March to raise funds for the 12 hospice care providers that serve the adults and children of the county.
The launch, which was generously sponsored by Harveys Brewery, was attended by FSH supporters and representatives from Demelza Hospice Care for Children, Leo House at Home, Martlets Hospice, St Catherine’s Hospice and St Wilfrid’s Hospice, Eastbourne.
Also present were Miles Jenner, Head Brewer at Harveys, Joe O’Riordan, past Chairman The Guild of Master Victuallers, and Nick Lewis, landlord of The Hare and Hounds in Framfield which starts off the month-long event by holding its quiz on Saturday, March 1.
One enthusiastic pub, The Three Cups in Punnetts Town, has jumped the gun and already held its first quiz, raising £210, and is planning to run a second during March.
FSH chair Kathy Gore, of Framfield, said: “This is a great fundraising and awareness-raising opportunity; it has the potential to create a great feel-good factor as it is such a fun way to support the wonderful work our hospices do.”
Sussex celebrity David Dimbleby is an active supporter of St Wilfrid’s Hospice in Eastbourne, and he has endorsed the event.
The broadcaster said: “The Mad March Pub Quiz Challenge is a great idea. I know about the work that our local hospice in Eastbourne does and the same is true about all the hospices in Sussex. The more of us that can support the quiz challenge the better. Please help.”
If pubs wish to support their local hospice they can take part and send the proceeds directly to that hospice.
The list of pubs holding quizzes during March is being constantly updated and can be viewed at www.friendsofsussexhospices.org.uk
