Southern Water’s mascot Miss Bin-It took on a pair of dastardly pirates and two tough kids in a tug of war with a rope made of wet wipes.
The clash, at the Play Day in Alexandra Park, Hastings, on August 6, demonstrated the strength of wipes which can cause blockages if they are flushed down the toilet.
While the pirates, from the Inside Out Theatre Company, and kids emerged victorious – Miss Bin-It was simply happy to get the message across that wipes are a pain in the drain.
The problem is highlighted by Southern Water’s Pain in the Drain campaign and the Clean Seas Please campaign, which is organised by Hastings Voluntary Action and Rother Voluntary Action.
The two organisations have been linking up to help reduce sewer blockages and keep beaches and bathing waters clean.
They advocate simple behavioural changes to keep sewers running freely such as not flushing wet wipes and not pouring cooking oil down sinks. Visit www.southernwater.co.uk/paininthedrain and www.cleanseasplease.net.
