Simon successfully campaigned for £484 million of funding to redevelop the hospital, parts of which predate Florence Nightingale. The final amount of funding was signed off by the Treasury last year and construction work began in January 2016.

The redevelopment is being split into three stages so that all clinical services can continue to be provided on site while work is ongoing.

Safety equipment has been lifted to the top of the Thomas Kemp Tower using a large crane and with preparation of the roof of the tower taking place, construction of the new helideck is definitely under way. The helideck is due to be completed in 2017 and will allow emergency helicopters to access the hospital directly for the first time. At the moment, they land nearby and transfer patients to an ambulance for the final part of the journey.

In May, three wards are due to move into temporary premises from the Jubilee Building. In June, another set of temporary premises at the front of the hospital should be completed and more services, including nuclear medicine, physiotherapy and rheumatology, will transfer over from current buildings.

Mr Kirby said: “It’s great to see the redevelopment under way and work progressing so well.

“The new hospital will have improved facilities, including an expanded Sussex Cancer Centre, and will truly be a hospital fit for the twenty first century.”
