Supporting young people’s speech, language and communication led to the prestigious Shine a Light Secondary School of the Year award for 2012 going to Peacehaven.
An I CAN Secondary Talk school, Peacehaven Community School received the award in honour of its good practices in the field.
Clare O’Rourke, proud speech and language teacher, said: “Our school has always been deeply committed to speech and language development.
“I CAN’s Secondary Talk enabled us to formalise this commitment and raised the profile of communication across the school.
“Language and communication is vital for all of our students and we have developed strategies that enable all children to access the curriculum, particularly those with communication difficulties. Secondary Talk’s practical and pragmatic approach has made a big impact, for example in science some students have made unprecedented progress in a year.”
I CAN’s Secondary Talk programme improves young people’s communication and helps increase attainment, by providing practical support and coaching for teaching staff.
Virginia Beardshaw, I CAN Chief Executive, said the award highlighted ability and commitment: “This award is truly deserved. They have harnessed I CAN’s Secondary Talk programme to support young people’s communication across the curriculum in innovative ways.”
