Sussex Downs College is delivering good quality teaching to students with a vibrant and inclusive environment promoting respect for all, says the latest Ofsted report.
The college, which has campuses in Lewes, Eastbourne and Newhaven, has welcomed the report following the inspection in April. Following another successful year, it has been awarded a Grade 2 (Good).
Ofsted identified that teaching, learning and assessment are good; teachers and support staff have a strong determination to help learners to succeed. Inspectors praised the verbal and written feedback students received from tutors, along with the variety of learning methods and activities adopted to motivate them. This is evidenced not only in the teaching team, but also by the support staff.
As a result, Ofsted said: “Learners enjoy their courses and have positive attitudes to their studies. Attendance rates are high and learners are motivated to succeed.”
Notable improvements included the quality of teaching, learning and assessment, and the learner experience. The college’s work with industry was praised, as it links students’ studies to future career paths. The report identifies that the college’s links with the business community are stronger than at any other time and local Chambers of Commerce hold Sussex Downs in high regard.
Ofsted said: “Teachers make effective use of regional and national skills competitions and projects to motivate learners and support them to develop excellent practical skills, especially in beauty therapy, hairdressing, construction, media and art and design.”
