A woman from Ripe is on course to be the first female Warfare Submariner Officer for the Royal Navy after completing a gruelling training scheme.
Sub Lieutenant Sophie Brook, 21, has just completed her Initial Warfare Officers Course (IWOC) at the Maritime Warfare School, HMS Collingwood, in Fareham.
She now has to complete a course on the HMS Sultan to become the first female Warfare Submariner Officer.
The IWO course prepares Warfare Officers for their first complement appointment at sea and in particular to act as an Officer of the Watch.
Sophie joined the Royal Navy in September 2011.
The former Lewes Old Grammar School student said her career highlight was serving on HMS Tyne.
She said: “I’m looking forward to starting the Nuclear General Course and the challenges ahead.”
On successful completion of the IWOC, the officers either join a ship immediately as an Officer of the Watch, or go on to specialise further, such as training to become Submariners, Aviators, Fighter Controllers or HM Officers.
