The commitment of volunteers at Rock Solid Youth Club have been recognised with awards at Newhaven Town Council’s Community Awards.

Wayne Hemmings and Peter Elms were given certificates of commendation for their work with the group.

The Rock Solid Youth Club band won £50 at a talent show organised by the Sussex Lions Clubs and Sussex Clubs for Young people.

They performed Happy by Pharrell Williams at the event at Uckfield Civic Centre held during April.

Youth worker Sara Alexander said: “Our young people were praised for how many of them took part in the talent show and their enthusiasm. “It is great that both our young people and our adult volunteers recognised for their commitment and dedication to the youth club.“

The youth club, which meets at Shakespeare Hall, on a Thursday evening during term time, has been running for more than 10 years.

It regularly attracts about 40 young people each week aged 11-16, who take part in sport, craft, team games, cooking and tuck shop.

The club has links with the Newhaven, Seaford and Peacehaven Lions and gives young people volunteering opportunities – helping at events such as the Seaford Half Marathon and the donkey derbys.

It also runs a session for young people aged 16 plus each week, with its own dedicated youth worker, to help them gain confidence, equip them with skills and train them as young leaders for the club.
