Some traders in Hailsham have praised the town’s street market and branded it a ‘resounding success’ since it opened in August last year.

Around 30 stalls sell a range of locally produced items in Vicarage Field in the town centre every Saturday except the Farmers’ Market Saturday (second of the month) when it falls on a Thursday.

Stallholders say they are happy with the busy High Street location and retailers benefit from the increased number of people visiting when the market is busy.

The market has also increased in size since it began last year with ten new traders setting up pitch this year.

Market trader Joan Russell, who set up pitch at the market at its opening last year selling homemade chutneys, said: “I’m finding the street market of great benefit to me and am building up a good client base for my homemade chutneys and savoury food items.”

Alison Benson, who sells baby gifts on a regular basis at the market, said: “I’ve found the street market to be very successful for my business and it definitely brings a lot of new people into the town centre.

“Also, it’s nice to have Hailsham back as a true market town.”

Stalls selling everything from fresh fruit, vegetables, pies, pet supplies, crafts, jewellery and cards to DVDs, clothing, plants, beauty products, vinegars, preserves and smoked fish have been drawing bargain hunters into the town and proved a hit with shoppers.

Mickey Caira, Hailsham Town Council deputy town clerk and business enterprise manager, said: “It’s great news to hear that traders – and indeed the public – are happy with the Hailsham Street Market, of which the town council has provided funding and manpower support for since its launch.

“If you have a good selection of stalls selling high quality locally produced items, people come time and time again.

“Many thanks to the residents and visitors who continue to support the market and make it the success it is today.”

Hailsham Street Market has a flexible structure in place to offer opportunities to stallholders who are unable to commit to hiring a stall at every market event.
