Three hardy souls will be attempting to swim the English Channel next week in aid of a children’s charity.

Paul Harris, from St Leonards, Sean Collins, from Bexhill and Victoria Malone, who lives in Battle, are undertaking the challenge as a one-way relay to raise money for Charity for Kids.

Each member of the team will swim for an hour before resting and undertaking another hour’s swim in a relay before arriving in France and will have support crew on a boat along the way.

Paul, founder and chairman of Charity for Kids, said the team is aiming to raise £5,000.

He said: “We will be taking on one of the world’s toughest challenges, swimming the Channel, which is known as the Everest of swimming. We will have to avoid more than 600 tankers and 200 ferries which pass through the Channel every 24 hours. This does not include sewage and seaweed which can cover the size of football pitches, jellyfish, driftwood, exhaustion, and hypothermia.”

Sean, who owns Sean’s Swim School, said: “I have seen the amazing work which Paul and the Charity for Kids committee do and the amount of time they give up to make a difference to local poorly children. I know that Paul is driven and inspired by his own family and he is desperate to one day set up a local respite facility.

“I have seen how generous the public have been over the last three years helping this fantastic charity raise more than £150,000 and making a difference to more than 70 children.

Sean has represented his county along with swimming at national level. Sean has stopped swimming competitively and now passes on his knowledge and know-how at Sean’s Swim School. He runs classes at Silverdale School in St Leonards, as well as Claremont Senior School.

Victoria said she has always wanted to swim the English Channel since a very young age and was delighted to be given an opportunity. To donate visit https://www.justgiving.com/Sean-Collins2. Cheques can also be made payable to Charity for Kids and sent to 41 Augustus Way, St Leonards-on-Sea, East Sussex, TN37 7NR.
