The poignant Procession of Witness took place in Lewes on Good Friday, a tradition stretching back more than 50 years.
Organised by Churches Together in Lewes, it started at St Pancras RC Church in Irelands Lane.
Christians from almost every church in the town walked in silence behind the heavy 12ft cross as it was carried through the streets to The Mount in Mountfield Road.
The cross was borne slowly to the summit and slotted into a pre-prepared space.
It was then a time for meditation on the Crucifixion of Christ, prayers, hymns and a blessing.
The cross stood over the Easter weekend, a symbol of the profound significance of the holiday.
