Visitors to a popular Eastbourne beauty spot are being advised to be wary of opportunist thieves after a Hailsham woman had her car broken into at the location.

Police said the woman from Hailsham parked her car at Butts Brow country park, Butts Lane, at 1.15pm on April 30 and went to walk her dog. When she returned to her vehicle at 2.15pm she discovered that the passenger side window was smashed and her bag which contained her purse had been taken. Police said on Sunday (May 4) another car was broken into in the same area. The front passenger window of the car, which was also parked at Butts Brow, was smashed and a large tobacco pouch was stolen. Police said the incident happened between 3.15pm and 4.15pm.

PCSO Andrew Harlow, of the Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “The majority of this type of crime is opportunistic and often occurs because valuables have been left on view. Always take your valuables with you and don’t hide things in the glove box.”

Witnesses: 101 or email: 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk quoting serial 772 of 30/04.
