An Uckfield resident is aiming to raise enough cash for a memorial to a wartime pilot whose bravery saved part of Uckfield from destruction by a flying bomb.
Belgian Pilot Officer Eugene Seghers was killed when a V1 rocket exploded after he tried to knock it off course.
Duncan Bennett has been supported by local townspeople and the Royal Air Forces Association has already given £500 towards the cost of a memorial stone which would be put up in Ridgewood. All he now needs is some money from residents and organisations to ensure the pilot’s sacrifice is remembered by future generations in the town he helped to protect.
He would like the memorial to be completed by the anniversary of Flt Lt Segher’s death on July 26 this year and needs between £1,300 to £2,300 to complete the job.
