Arrest after woman assaulted at Birling Gap

A MAN was arrested by police moments after an assault on a woman walking alone at Birling Gap.

The 50-year-old East Dean woman was walking along a footpath that leads from Birling Gap to Beachy Head at 12.30pm on Thursday May 10 when she was approached by a man who forced her to the ground.

However, she struggled free and screamed and the man ran off.

Police swiftly searched the area and 15 minutes after receiving the report arrested a 26-year-old man nearby on suspicion of sexual assault.

He is currently in custody for interview and further enquiries.
