Following a day of torrential downpours the clouds parted late on Saturday afternoon over the Nevill Estate in Lewes – providing a perfect night for the 46th Nevill Juvenile Bonfire Society bonfire celebrations.
There was a tremendous turnout as usual from NJBS members in their fine regalia of Valencian, medieval, early 20th century military and smuggler costumes.
They were accompanied by more than 600 members from the other six Lewes bonfire societies.
The processions led to Nevill Green where a two-minute silence was observed during a moving ceremony of remembrance staged by Street Firework Captain Emma Fisk.
Following this they were joined by the mighty effigy of Guy Fawkes being ‘catch’d’ and a tableau of Prime Minister David Cameron ‘Fracking for Gas’.
As always the evening was topped off by a splendid 20-minute display of fireworks and a huge
bonfire on Landport Bottom. A good night indeed all round.
