Manhole covers were stolen from the length of Possingworth Lane, Waldron overnight late last week.
Waldron resident Valerie Chidson told the Express open drains were exposed and council workers placed traffic cones over the holes. She said: “It’s incredibly dangerous. A vehicle could swerve into one of the drains or a walker or rider could be badly injured.” Highways engineers said they would make the road safe. Wealden District Commander Dick Coates said last year’s metal thefts spate had fallen off since new scrap laws.
“I ask everyone in to report anything suspicious and we’ll check it out. I am not concerned if it’s a false alarm as I would rather have those than a crime committed. Locals are our eyes and ears.”
