Members of Hailsham Rotary Club were treated to a thought provoking talk by PhD student from France, Sophie Betka.

Sophie is studying at the Sussex Medical School in conjunction with University of Brighton and University of Sussex.

She received a grant from Rotary International and her own Rotary Club in France.

The funding will pay for her three years of education where she is studying the impact of oxytocin on emotional regulation in alcohol and binge drinking.

Sophie, a qualified neuropsychologist, outlined a number of disturbing facts about alcohol, including 395 billion euros per year are spent on alcohol across Europe in a year and in the UK 11 per cent of the population have alcohol related disorders.

Hailsham Rotary Club is her host club in the South East and said it was looking forward to hearing how her research progresses.
