East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is offering the opportunity for people to become retained firefighters in Wealden.

Applicants would have to live or work within five minutes of the stations at Herstmonceux, Wadhurst, Mayfield and Forest Row so they can easily respond to emergencies.

Borough Commander Mani Gilbert-King said, “Becoming a retained firefighter can really bring something new to your life.

“You are trained to be a vital part of our service, working to keep communities safe and being there when people most need us.

“We hope that people from all walks of life will consider applying for this role. If you are dedicated and enthusiastic, ready to push yourself to learn and experience new things, we would love to hear from you.”

Nick Winstanley, a retained firefighter at Herstmonceux, said, “I saw the advert and thought – yes, I can do that. The most rewarding part is knowing that I am protecting people in my home village.”

When asked what do his friends and family think, he added, “They are very proud.”
