GENEROUS folk have poured money into the coffers of the Royal British Legion (RBL) to help the charity which supports injured armed forces personnel, past and present.
Mike Weller, who is the poppy organiser and chairman of Hailsham RBL, said £13,972.53 had been raised throughout the Hailsham and Hellingly areas by various methods such as house-to-house collections and donations at manned points.
A table at Tesco in the town raised £2,500 of this total and there was another stand in the Quintins Shopping Centre which boosted the cash collected from townsfolk.
Last year £15,192 was raised but Mr Weller believed that figure would be beaten by this year’s fundraising effort once the monies gained from the poppy wreath collection are calculated into the final total.
Mr Weller thanked shops, businesses and residents for their support, adding: “It is hard work, working early mornings and late evenings but when you come down to it, at the end of the day, it is all worthwhile.”
