E coli advice for Wealden District

Wealden District Council’s Environmental Health team has been receiving enquiries regarding the outbreak in Germany of E.coli O104 that can cause severe food poisoning and occasionally leads to kidney problems.

The outbreak affecting several hundred German people is thought to be associated with Spanish organic cucumbers. The Food Standards Agency has confirmed that no cucumbers originating from the problem areas of Spain are being sold in the UK.

The Health Protection Agency recommends that any travellers returning from Germany with illness including bloody diarrhoea should seek urgent medical attention and make sure that they mention any recent travel history.

The general advice from the Environmental Health team is to continue to wash all salad items thoroughly before consumption.
