East Sussex Firefighters have launched an appeal for businesses to check their automatic alarms systems after it reveals more than half of its call-outs are false alarms.

In the year 2014/15 East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service responded to 8,776 incidents, 4,424 of which were false alarms– more than 50 per cent.

Around 3,032 of those calls were from automatic fire alarm systems.

The fire service say the false call-outs put both the public and fire crews at unecssary risk and urge businesses to ensure their fire systems are correctly installed and where possible stop false alarms being sent to the fire service.

Firefighters say both businesses and the taxpayer are spending money on these avoidable calls.
