LOCAL children have been discovering the wonders of their woodland thanks to free outdoor learning days.

They enjoyed an outing to Views Wood near Uckfield to experience a woodland discovery day run by the National Trust and sponsored by retailer TK Maxx.

Primary schools taking part were Newick; Wallands, Lewes; St John’s, Crowborough; Lindfield Special School, Eastbourne; St Mary’s Catholic Primary, Crowborough and Torfield Special School, Hastings.

The programme aims to make learning about the natural environment fun, interactive and engaging and provide schoolchildren with better access to woodland. Children were encouraged to learn about sounds, sights and feelings from woodland. They became intrepid explorers by learning all bushcraft: tracking animals, lighting fires, building dens and even tasting stinging nettles! Heritage plays an important role in the visits, with the Trust’s educational packs and resources helping schools link discovery days activities to the national curriculum.
