A police helicopter, the coastguard and RNLI were called out to Beachy Head after a reports of a man disappearing from the edge of the cliffs.
However after a thorough search of the area, emergency services were stood down, and said it was a false alarm.
Sussex Police said it was called out at 12.27pm, after a member of the Beachy Head chaplaincy saw a man at the edge of the cliffs 50 metres east of the lighthouse. But the man disappeared from sight.
The police helicopter from Redhill, The Eastbourne Coastguard and Rescue Team and the Eastbourne inshore lifeboat joined the search along the cliff face and shoreline, but nothing was found.
A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokeswoman said the team were stood down this afternoon, as it was a false alarm with good intent.
